Palembang, KOTABARI.COM – The Public Prosecutor’s Office (JPU) has demanded a two-year prison sentence for Edi Kurniawan, a civil servant from the Inspectorate of South Sumatra, for his involvement in a bribery case linked to the former Principal of SMA Negeri 19 Palembang.
Edi Kurniawan stands accused of accepting gratification from Slamet, who was then serving as the Principal of SMA Negeri 19 Palembang, amounting to Rp 65.5 million. The gratification was purportedly aimed at influencing the handling of a corruption case involving committee funds at the aforementioned school.
In its demand, the public prosecutor stated that Edi Kurniawan’s actions had been convincingly proven to constitute corruption as stipulated in Article 5 paragraph (2) of Law Number 31 of 1999 concerning the Eradication of Corruption Crimes, as amended by Law Number 20 of 2001.
“The public prosecutor demands that the Corruption Court in Palembang impose a prison sentence of 2 years on the defendant, Edi Kurniawan, with a reduction for the duration spent in detention,” said the public prosecutor on Thursday (28/3/2024).
In addition to the prison term, the public prosecutor also requested a fine of Rp 50 million, with a subsidiary sentence of 3 months imprisonment.
Following the prosecution’s demand, the panel of judges granted the defendant, through his legal counsel, one week to present his defense or plea.
According to the indictment, Slamet sought assistance from the defendant, Edi Kurniawan, to influence the handling of his ongoing case involving witness Boby H Holomoan Sirait, who was serving as the Head of the Special Crime Section at the Palembang District Attorney’s Office at that time.
Edi Kurniawan was found to have accepted a bribe amounting to Rp 65.5 million from Slamet, the former Principal of SMA Negeri 19 Palembang. As a result, the defendant, who was part of the committee fund examination team for the 2021-2022 development projects, attempted to manipulate the handling of Slamet’s case through Boby H Sirait, the Head of the Special Crime Section at the Palembang District Attorney’s Office.
