Palembang, KOTABARI.COM – Thousands of workers affiliated with labor unions in South Sumatra (Sumsel) are set to stage a demonstration on Wednesday (1/5/2024) in the city of Palembang.
The demonstration is scheduled to commence from the Governor’s Office of South Sumatra to the Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD) Office of South Sumatra.
The demands to be voiced by the thousands of workers include the abolition of outsourcing practices and the repeal of the Omnibus Law on Job Creation.
“We will conduct the demonstration on Wednesday (1/5/2024),” stated Hermawan, Chairman of the Federation of Trade Unions (FSB) for Commerce, Information Technology, Finance, Banking, and Various Industries (Nikeuba) of Palembang, on Tuesday (30/4/2024).
Hermawan explained that between 1000 to 2000 workers, representing various labor unions in South Sumatra (Sumsel), are expected to participate in the demonstration.
“Our plan is to begin the demonstration around 10:00 AM. We will march from the Governor’s Office of South Sumatra to the Provincial DPRD,” he elaborated.
He emphasized that the demands raised during this May Day demonstration remain consistent, focusing on the elimination of outsourcing practices and the revocation of the Omnibus Law on Job Creation.
“Although these issues have been longstanding, they remain unresolved. Therefore, we continue to voice our concerns,” he added.
According to Hermawan, outsourcing results in a lack of job security, with workers being continuously employed by third-party entities without clear employment status. This situation, he argued, unfairly disadvantages workers, as there is no certainty regarding their employment conditions.
