Palembang, KOTABARI.COM – The financial turmoil within Sriwijaya FC has reached a breaking point, as 27 players have unanimously decided to strike ahead of their home match against PSPS Pekanbaru in the 2024/25 Pegadaian Liga 2 on Saturday (December 14, 2024). The players’ decision comes as a protest against the management’s failure to pay their salaries for two months and overdue contract down payments (DP) from three months ago.

“We, the entire Sriwijaya FC team, declare that we will not participate in the December 14, 2024 match against PSPS Pekanbaru unless all our rights are paid,” the players stated in an official letter signed on stamped paper.

The situation puts the upcoming match at Gelora Sriwijaya Jakabaring Stadium in jeopardy. If Sriwijaya FC fails to field players, the game could result in a 0-3 forfeit loss (walk out or WO) for the club. According to Liga 2 regulations (Article 7), any team withdrawing from a match will face severe sanctions, including a two-season disqualification, fines of up to IDR 3 billion, and a requirement to return contributions from sponsors and other stakeholders.

Fans and Supporters Rally Behind the Team

Sriwijaya FC’s loyal supporters, known as Ultras Palembang, expressed deep disappointment over the crisis. “We regret that it has come to this. The management must take immediate and concrete steps to save this team,” said Qusoi SH, a prominent leader of the supporters.

Under mounting pressure, Sriwijaya FC’s manager, Ajie Syahrial Bastari, assured that efforts are being made to resolve the issue. “Yes, we’re working on a solution,” he said briefly.

Crisis Affects Team Performance

The financial crisis has only compounded Sriwijaya FC’s on-field struggles. The team has secured just 7 points from 12 matches and currently sits in 8th place in Group 1, leaving them in the relegation play-off zone.

Adding to the turmoil, two key players, Ade Suryana and Bhutanese striker Chencho Gyeltshen, have bid farewell to the team. Ade is reportedly set to join Dejan FC, while Chencho is moving to PSKC Cimahi.

A Race Against Time

With the clock ticking, players, supporters, and football analysts alike hope the management can resolve the crisis before the crucial match against PSPS Pekanbaru. Swift and decisive action is critical to restoring the pride and reputation of the Laskar Wong Kito, the pride of South Sumatra.

“Stop making empty promises. We’ve fulfilled our duties,” one of the players asserted.
