Palembang, KOTABARI.COM – The Sukawinatan Landfill, located in the Sukarame District of Palembang City, has once again made headlines due to a fire incident that has released thick smoke, causing visibility and breathing problems for nearby residents.
Thick smoke from the Sukawinatan Landfill has been observed since Thursday (August 31, 2023) afternoon and continued into Friday (September 1, 2023). Today, personnel from the Fire Department and the Public Order Agency (Satpol-PP) of South Sumatra Province, with assistance from the Palembang City Environmental Agency (DPBK) and Manggala Agni, worked tirelessly to extinguish the fire originating from the “Trash Mountain.”
“Since yesterday, the fire has been emitting smoke, and fortunately, we have managed to contain the flames, although some smoke is still present,” stated Samiun, the Commander of the Fire Brigade Squad (Danru) of Satpol-PP South Sumatra, at the scene of the incident.
While the immediate fire has been controlled, the exact cause of the fire remains uncertain. However, authorities remain vigilant and are working to reduce the smoke emanating from the Sukawinatan Landfill.
To combat the fire, one fire truck and two portable water pumps have been deployed, as the landfill location is difficult to access by regular vehicles.
Ahmad Mustain, the Head of the Palembang City Environmental Agency (DLHK), stated that the fire at the Sukawinatan Landfill has been successfully contained. However, when asked about specific measures to prevent a recurrence of such incidents, he declined to comment further.
“The current situation is that the fire has been successfully extinguished, and we are continuing to spray water to reduce the smoke,” said Mustain.
The police and local authorities will conduct further investigations to determine the exact cause of the fire and ensure the safety of the Sukawinatan Landfill in the future. Nearby residents are advised to remain cautious and avoid areas affected by the smoke.
