PALEMBANG, KOTABARI.COM – The National Police Commission (Kompolnas) has stepped in to monitor the ongoing investigation into the assault case involving a co-assistant medical student from the Faculty of Medicine at Sriwijaya University (FK Unsri), which has drawn significant public attention. Kompolnas representatives visited the South Sumatra Police Headquarters (Polda Sumsel) on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.

The investigation has progressed to the stage of witness examinations, including testimonies from Sri Meilina and Lady. Kompolnas Commissioner M Choirul Anam stated that investigators are also securing digital traces from the suspects’ and witnesses’ mobile devices as part of the evidence-gathering process.

“In this case, all digital evidence has been thoroughly reviewed. The investigators’ approach is not solely reliant on viral materials but also focuses on digital footprints, which provide stronger evidence,” explained Choirul Anam.

He emphasized that video snippets circulating on social media are merely expressions of public concern and not the main basis for the investigation. “What’s essential is the solid evidence that can support the case,” he added.

In addition to visiting the South Sumatra Police Headquarters, Kompolnas also made a visit to the Faculty of Medicine at Unsri and met with the victim, Luthfi, who is still undergoing recovery. According to Choirul, Luthfi has provided a detailed account of the incident.

“The victim’s testimony and digital footprints have shed sufficient light on this incident,” Choirul remarked.

When asked about the examinations being conducted at the Ilir Timur II Police Station instead of the South Sumatra Police Headquarters, Choirul confirmed that this is in line with legal procedures. “It doesn’t matter if the examination is conducted at a police station or elsewhere, as long as it does not violate Article 113 of the Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP). For the convenience of the victim or witnesses, investigators are allowed to meet them at a location of their choosing,” he said.

Choirul also praised the efforts of the Unit V Sub-Directorate III Jatanras team from the South Sumatra Police in handling the legal process.

“The investigators deserve commendation for their swift action and adherence to procedure,” he concluded.

The assault case involving the FK Unsri student remains a public concern, and Kompolnas has assured that the legal process will proceed with transparency and fairness.
