Lubuklinggau’s Chief of the General Election Commission (KPU), Topandri, has been detained for 20 days following a tragic accident that claimed the lives of two siblings. The incident occurred when a car driven by Topandri collided with a motorcycle on the PALI-Mura Road in Benakat Minyak Village, Talang Ubi District, PALI Regency, South Sumatra, on Sunday, December 24, 2023.
According to AKP Kukuh Fefrianto, the Head of Traffic of PALI Regional Police, after conducting an inquiry, it was established that there were elements of negligence on Topandri’s part while driving the Toyota Rush B 2473 POZ. The negligence involved high speed and a lack of understanding of the road conditions, resulting in the fatal accident.
“We unanimously agreed to escalate this case to an investigation level and designate the Driver of the Toyota, Topandri, as a suspect,” he explained.
The investigation is based on Article 310 Paragraphs 1, 3, and 4 of Law No. 22 of 2009 concerning Traffic and Road Transportation (UU LLAJ). The penalty for this offense could reach up to 6 years in prison or a maximum fine of Rp12 million.
Regarding attempts at reconciliation, AKP Kukuh emphasized that the legal process will continue regardless of any mediation attempts between the two parties. PALI Regional Police will not facilitate mediation in this case.
This tragic incident raises significant concerns about road safety and law enforcement. It is hoped that fair law enforcement and increased caution while driving can prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
