Palembang, KOTABARI.COM – Heavy rain that poured down on Palembang since Saturday night has caused severe flooding in several areas on Sunday (March 9, 2025). One of the worst-hit locations is the Simpang Empat traffic light near the South Sumatra Police Headquarters, where floodwaters have risen significantly.

Upon hearing about the flooding, Palembang Mayor Ratu Dewa wasted no time and went straight to the field after his dawn prayers. Wearing a green outfit and a cap, he inspected the overflowing retention pond at the police headquarters.

Without delay, Ratu Dewa called the head of the River Basin Authority (BBWS) and ordered the activation of water pumps to speed up drainage.

“Sir, please turn on the water pumps so the floodwaters can recede quickly,” he instructed while on-site.

Swift Response and Public Appeal

Ratu Dewa explained that the heavy rainfall overnight was the primary cause of the flooding. He assured the public that he would continue to inspect affected areas and deploy emergency teams to mitigate the impact.

“We are doing our best to handle this flooding situation. I also urge residents not to litter, as our field inspections revealed many clogged drains that contribute to the problem,” he said.

Officials Urged to Take Action

To ensure a coordinated response, Ratu Dewa instructed all relevant government units—from municipal offices to district and subdistrict officials—to actively monitor and report flood conditions.

“Officials should not rest yet. Everyone must take immediate action, both short-term and long-term. Blocked drainage systems must be cleared as soon as possible, and direct assistance must be provided to affected residents,” he emphasized.

While some flooded areas have shown signs of water receding, others remain heavily submerged. Ratu Dewa has called on the relevant agencies to update flood data regularly to ensure effective response efforts.

“We need updated reports on flood-prone areas—those that have been resolved, those still submerged, and any newly affected locations,” he added.

As a short-term solution, the city government is focusing on clearing clogged drains, using water pumps to accelerate drainage, and deploying heavy equipment in critical areas.

With these measures, authorities hope that the floods in Palembang will subside soon, allowing residents to resume their daily activities without disruption.
