Kepulauan Yapen – The Papua Regional Police (Polda Papua) is investigating an alleged case of domestic violence involving a Papua deputy governor candidate, identified as YB, against his wife, GR. The incident reportedly occurred in a hotel in Kepulauan Yapen on Sunday (December 1, 2024) at around 1:00 AM WIT.
According to the Papua Police’s Head of Public Relations, Commissioner Ignatius Benny Ady Prabowo, YB initially invited his wife to the hotel under the pretense of resolving marital issues. Upon her arrival, YB forced GR to drink alcohol.
“When the victim refused, the alcohol spilled and soaked her clothes,” Benny explained on Saturday (December 7, 2024).
The situation escalated when GR opened the room’s curtains out of suspicion and found her older sister there in a drunken state. YB allegedly attempted to coerce GR into engaging in a threesome with her sister.
“The perpetrator forcibly removed the victim’s clothes and tried to compel her into engaging in sexual activity, but the victim refused and managed to escape,” Benny continued.
After fleeing the hotel, GR returned home. However, YB followed her at around 4:00 AM WIT. An argument broke out, which ended with YB allegedly assaulting her by pulling her hair and slapping her, causing her to lose consciousness.
When GR regained consciousness, YB called her and demanded she return to the hotel. When she refused, YB threatened further violence.
GR used a speedboat to report the incident to the Biak Numfor Police Station. The case has since been transferred to the Papua Regional Police for further investigation.
YB now faces charges under Article 46 in conjunction with Article 8(a) and/or Article 44(1) in conjunction with Article 5(a) of Law No. 23 of 2004 on the Elimination of Domestic Violence. If found guilty, YB could face a maximum prison sentence of five years or a fine of up to IDR 15 million.
The Papua Regional Police continue to investigate to ensure justice is served.
