Muara Lakitan, Musi Rawas, KOTABARI.COM -Residents of Sungai Pinang Village, Muara Lakitan District, Musi Rawas Regency, South Sumatra Province, were shocked by the discovery of thousands of chicken carcasses found in two rivers in the village.
It is estimated that thousands of chicken carcasses were dumped into the river by unknown individuals.
The presence of the chicken carcasses has caused concern among nearby residents due to the extremely foul odor emanating from them.
The Village Secretary (Sekdes) of Sungai Pinang, Adi, confirmed the discovery when contacted by kotabari.com on Thursday (28/03/2024).
According to him, the chickens were estimated to have been dumped into the river three days ago, but were only noticed by residents after the unbearable stench became apparent.
“It may have been three days, and the foul smell has only become noticeable now,” Adi told kotabari.com.
Adi explained that the chicken carcasses were not only found at one point but were apparently dumped at two different points in the river’s flow.
“At two locations, first in Sungai Kepayang and second in Sungai Air Jeruk. So, in the downstream of Sungai Pinang Village one and in the upstream of Sungai Pinang Village one,” he said.
Adi added that although the two river streams are no longer used by residents, they are disturbed by the foul smell emanating from the chicken carcasses.
“Moreover, the locations are right by the roadside, so the odor greatly disturbs residents and road users,” he expressed.
Following the discovery, the village government, along with residents, has reported the incident to the Muara Lakitan Police Station for further action.
“Our step was to report the discovery to the Muara Lakitan Police Station. The police have also checked the location,” he added.
Police Call for the Culprits
Meanwhile, Musi Rawas Police Chief, AKBP Andi Supriadi, through Muara Lakitan Police Chief, AKP M Karim, confirmed the incident. He also stated that they have received reports from residents.
“Yes, our Criminal Investigation Unit has just finished checking the crime scene,” said the police chief when contacted by kotabari.com on Thursday (28/03/2024).
The police chief also acknowledged that they have identified the suspected perpetrators who dumped the chicken carcasses and are currently in the process of summoning them.
“We are currently summoning those suspected of owning the chickens for questioning,” he explained.
Preventive measures will be taken by urging the chicken owners to clean up the river.
“We are still asking them to clean up the river, and if there is no solution, we will involve the Department of Environment and Special Crimes due to environmental pollution,” the police chief emphasized.
