Musi Rawas, KOTABARI.COM – Semangus Lama Village in Muara Lakitan Sub-district, Musi Rawas Regency, South Sumatra, is grappling with persistent flooding that has submerged residential areas for over 11 days. The water level, still exceeding 2.5 meters, has paralyzed the daily activities of the residents.
Deris, the Head of Semangus Lama Village, revealed that the water level has yet to show a significant decrease. It even rose overnight before stabilizing again at 2.5 meters. Consequently, the locals remain unable to carry out their normal activities, including earning a living to meet their daily needs.
The most significant impact felt by the residents is the depletion of essential supplies, particularly rice. This situation is becoming increasingly concerning as the floodwaters persist.
“The water is still high, so we can’t resume our activities, and basic needs are running out,” said Head of the Village Deris when contacted by Sripoku.com on Sunday (01/21/2024).
Initially, the residents received assistance in the form of instant noodles from the local government, but the quantity was limited to 200 cartons. The current plea from the residents is clear: they urgently need more substantial rice assistance.
“Rice is the most needed now because it’s already gone,” emphasized Head of the Village Deris. He mentioned that the residents had also received rice from a legislative candidate (Caleg), but the quantity was only 1.5 kilograms per household and has been consumed.
Deris added that the overall health condition of the Semangus Lama Village residents is relatively good, with only a few cases of fever and itching reported. Nevertheless, he still highlights the urgent need for rice assistance and other essential supplies.
“We hope for rice assistance because that’s what the residents need the most right now,” said Head of the Village Deris, expressing hope for more attention from the government to address the emergency situation faced by the residents.
